Phase 3 of the Project

So this project has always been about three things: Health, Fitness, and self improvement.

One thing I’ve wanted to improve is taking care of my body in the sense of doing things I never typically would, aside from what I eat.  I was always one of those guys who would just whatever shampoo, soap, tooth paste, etc and I didn’t give it much thought.  There’s a reason my friends call me a “lumberjack”, I would just call it living a simple life.

But I’ve become open to the idea of using products that aren’t damaging to my body, but healthy for me.  The whole point is to not put more toxins in my body but to have the least amount as possible.  A while back I started using a more natural tooth paste and I’ve been adamant on brushing at least twice a day.  I switched to an organic all natural soap that does not use damaging chemicals or additives.

Recently I came across a newer company called Portland General Store, they are a Maine based company who happened upon some vintage soap and perfume recipe books and a collection of antique, Czechoslovakian pharmacy bottles. Their experimentation began with creams and bath salts and led, eventually, to their current product line, made from simple, natural ingredients using time-tested methods. They don’t use the fragrance oils and chemical additives which are commonly found today.

I purchased their shampoo, conditioner, smelling salt (morning pick me up), and a face mud.

I’ve come to realize that while I may improve my insides, I also need to properly care for the outer shell of my body as it is what protects my internal make up.  We often forget that the toxins we put on our skin are then absorbed directly in to our body, often suffocating our pores and not allowing us to truly breath. These toxins can effect us on the inside and that would be counter productive to everything I’m trying to do.

So this is only part one of Phase 3, the other half I call: Look Good, Feel Good and I will eventually get in to that when I arrive at that stage.

I’m hoping what people will take away from this is, don’t just read labels when you buy your food, make sure you know what you’re putting on your body, not just inside it.

First Ice Bath

So tonight I decided to do my first ice bath in an attempt to help my recovery after a pretty brutal (and amazing) lower body workout today.  I use to do these in high school during football, but clearly I forgot what that feeling was like.  After dumping 44 lbs of ice in to the tub and filling it half way with freezing cold water I dove in (figuratively), I immediately started to hyperventilate.  It took me about 30 seconds to relax my mind and focus on my breath.  At that same moment I was able to remove the pain from my mind.  I’ve recently started practicing meditation, so I put those ideas to work immediately.

For those of you who think ice baths are only good for one thing, you are wrong.  While most people know that ice baths help you recover faster and help you with inflammation, sore muscles, and prevent injuries….it does have another benefit.

You have to be open minded to the concept, but in my eyes, it just simply makes sense.  When your body is exposed to an extreme temperature drop, your core body temperature plunges.  When this happens, your body goes in to defense mode and releases brown fats in an attempt to burn fat while bringing your body temperature back to normal.  Only a few ounces of brown fat have the ability to burn between 400 and 500 calories.  This will also result in your metabolism to spike, also helping to bring your core temperature back to normal.

So while this isn’t for everyone, there are some very interesting studies based around the idea of colder conditions that will actually boost your metabolism which can result in higher weight loss.  Our metabolism actually works 20% higher in 60 degree weather, so don’t be mad if the weather is a little chillier than normal.  Take advantage of it and go for a brisk walk.

Give it a try….I feel fabulous right now, especially now that I can feel my legs.  I also feel like I’m going to sleep very well tonight…..
